Facebook to change its company name, report says

Facebook may be getting a rebrand.

The social media giant plans to change its name next week, according to a report Tuesday.

Citing “a source with direct knowledge of the matter,” the Verge reported that the Silicon Valley corporation wants to be known less for social media than for what the tech publication called “its focus on building the metaverse.”

CEO Mark Zuckerberg plans to talk about the name change and the associated rebranding plans Oct. 28 at the company’s annual Connect conference, but the move may be made public before that, the Verge reported.

“The rebrand would likely position the blue Facebook app as one of many products under a parent company overseeing groups like Instagram, WhatsApp, Oculus, and more,” the Verge wrote.

Facebook declined to comment on the Verge’s story.

The article did not say what the new name would be.

Mr. Zuckerberg already had told the Verge, in an interview in July that the company he founded “will effectively transition from people seeing us as primarily being a social media company to being a metaverse company.”
